AUTOMATIC STEEL BAR PRICING IN THE WORKS (11/06/2007)

The Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs has managed to get makers and buyers of steel bars to come to a compromise on the ceiling price. They have agreed to another increase of about 5%. This is despite the ministry having increased the ceiling price by 20% in April to between RM1,800 and nearly RM2,000 per tonne, a source says.

The latest adjustment is deemed to be an interim measure to purge the industry of "grey market prices" and to ensure adequate supply. At the same time, a new pricing formula based on an automatic price mechanism (APM) is being worked out. A source says the APM will ensure steel bar makers a gross product margin of about 20% based on the cost of raw materials consumed. News from The Edge Daily 11 June 2007 by Siow Chen Ming
