Malaysia may look towards Asean Free Trade Area (Afta) so that consumers could enjoy a freer flow of goods at better prices, said the newly-appointed Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad. PUTRAJAYA, March 24, 2008 (Bernama)
"Although many are aware of Afta, a comprehensive programme of regional tariff reduction, which has already been in existence since 2003, Malaysia keeps thinking of its boundary only in getting goods for its consumers," he told reporters at his office here today.
Shahrir said price controls would not be effective without the control of supply of goods as well.
The prices of goods were determined by supply and demand. The former comes under the Agricultural and Agro-based Industry Ministry, Ministry of International Trade and Industry and Plantation Industries and Commodities Ministry.
Malaysia, he added, should source its goods from Afta instead of threatening local suppliers to supply at certain prices.
