The members of Master Builders Association Malaysia (MBAM) are mulling the idea of importing building materials in an effort to ensure consistent supply. KUALA LUMPUR, March 25, 2008 (Bernama)

"Our members and building material distributors are ready to explore the possibility of importing directly in order to ensure construction is carried out in a timely manner and supply is consistent," its secretary-general, Yap Yoke keong, said in a statement here Tuesday.

"Our members and building material distributors are ready to explore the possibility of importing directly in order to ensure construction is carried out in a timely manner and supply is consistent," its secretary-general, Yap Yoke keong, said in a statement here Tuesday.

He said MBAM members were unable to obtain steel bars and cement at the government-controlled price and supported Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Datuk Shahrir Samad's plan to remove the price control mechanism.

Yap said the construction industry faced an increase in purchase price for cement.

"For example, on average the actual transaction price for cement is roughly RM2.00 - RM3.00 more than the RM10.95 ceiling price for central region.

"The situation is compounded because it is difficult to obtain supply even if contractors were to pay cash. The bleak situation will cause unnecessary delay in construction works," he said.

He said the ministry should scrap the price control for steel bars and cement.
